Ethan and Ava have been gifted the Fraidy Cat Game by Playmonster to try and Ethan couldn’t wait for Ava to try it. You might of seen us post about it on our instagram page. In Fraidy Cat you have to see if you can get back to the cat flap without getting caught by Mug the Pug and being knocked off your fence post.
Watch out kitties, Mugs the motorised pug is on the loose! One big bump from Mugs sends your kitty flying, and you have to go back! Don’t be a Fraidy Cat… if your kitty is sitting on a dustbin they are safe, Mugs can’t reach you! Be the first player to get your cat around the garden to win the game! The purrfect race game for fur flying fun! For 2-4 players. Requires 3x 1.5v AAA batteries.
It was super easy to set up as the box is the game board and the only thing that needed doing was the stickers on the cats and the batteries in Mug the dog. Ethan really enjoyed it and somehow managed to win so I reckon a rematch is on the cards for us two and we will get Nick and Ava to play too so it makes it a slightly longer game.
Getting ready to play
- Loading the Launcher: Choose a cat pawn and load it onto the cat launcher that
has the matching colour paw label. All players do the same.
- Place your cat and launcher on one of the four tall fence posts behind Mugs’ doghouse.
All players do the same.
- Place Mugs on the game board in front of his doghouse.
Make sure he faces out into the yard!
How to Play Fraidy Cat
Choose a player to go first. Play then continues clockwise. When it’s your turn, roll both dice onto the game board. We play by youngest player go first as then it is fair but on the next game we go with eldest first.
What you roll determines what you do next:
If you Roll 2 Numbers, move your cat clockwise along the fence posts the total
number shown on the dice. This ends your turn.
If you roll a number and a picture of Mugs, first move your cat clockwise along the
fence posts the number shown on the dice. Now remove the dice from the game board.
Then press the button on Mugs’ collar to send him chasing after the cats.
This ends your turn.
If you roll 2 pictures of Mugs, remove the dice from the game board. Then press the
button on Mugs’ collar to send him off to chase the cats! This ends your turn
How to Move your Cat Player
Hold your cat and move it (with its launcher) clockwise along the fence posts the total show on the dice. Each fence post counts as ‘1’ on your dice roll. When moving, jump over any cats in front of you. Do not occupy spaces as part of your dice roll. Count barrels as regular fence post spaces. Mugs can’t reach your cat if it’s sitting in a barrel.
Mugs on the Move
When you press the button on Mugs’ collar, he will start moving around the game board, bumping into the fence – or maybe even into your cat to send it flyin’! Mugs will keep moving for about 12 seconds before he stops to catch his breath. Once Mugs stops, leave him where he is. Whee!! Flyin’ Kitties!
If Mugs bumps into your cat and send it flyin’ into the air, reload your cat onto its launcher and move
it back to the nearest unoccupied barrel. If Mugs sends more than one cat flyin’, reload each cat
onto its launcher. Move the first cat that was knocked off back to the nearest barrel; move the second cat that was knocked off back to the second nearest barrel, etc. If you cannot move back to a barrel , return to one of the tall fence posts behind Mugs’ doghouse and start from there on your next turn.
How to Win Fraidy Cat!
The first player to move his or her cat along the entire fence and back to Mugs’ doghouse is the winner!
What Did We Think?
Ethan and I both loved it and Ava was super excited to play it. Both times I have lost out to the kids so a big rematch is definitely on the cards. I would recommend this to anyone with kids over 5 as it is easy to understand, simple to play and doesn’t take hours to play either like other games.
(Full Instructions included on the box but if you need it then here is the online version.)
Where Can your purchase fraidy cat?
Fraidy Cat is available in a lot of toy stores but the best price I found was via The Playmonster website. Don’t forget to purchase the batteries too!
